Government Official Confirms MoD Examining Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Personnel Told to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

An defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible security risks posed by Chinese-made cars, while staff have been instructed to avoid talking about secret matters in all vehicles.

Safety Guidance for Defence Personnel

During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed reports that MoD staff have been told not to talk about secret information while travelling in China-made cars.

He explained that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however stressed that safety is a issue in every contemporary cars.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their car, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any vehicle, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in all vehicle, to only have those secret talks in protected areas. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about security.

After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, the minister replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Wider Security Background

This revelation comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the existence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could enable China to switch off public transport and bring disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly directing lasers at RAF aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.

This wider defence situation underscores the importance of strong measures and vigilance in all areas of government activities, from vehicle usage to discussions habits.
