British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several entry passages leading to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were a great many British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
